Edward Shore is a PhD candidate in the History Department at the University of Texas at Austin specializing in the history of slavery, race, agro-ecology, alternative development in Brazil. His dissertation, "Geographies of Resistance: Fugitive Slave Communities, their Descendants, and the Struggle for Land and Environmental Justice in Brazil's Atlantic Forest" examines the long-term struggles of the black peasantry over land, natural resources, and autonomy.
