Matthew Butler is associate professor in the history of modern Mexico in the Department of History at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the author or editor of numerous books on Mexican agrarian and religious history, including Popular Piety and Political Identity in Mexico’s Cristero Rebellion: Michoacán, 1927–1929 (Oxford, 2004) and Faith and Impiety in Revolutionary Mexico (New York, 2007).
